This is a little application that I made that plays MIDI files, DirectMusic runtime segment files, and wave files through the DirectX 8 Audio interface. I made it for the benefit of people who wish to hear the MIDI files on my Melodies of Heaven page the way that they were meant to sound but who don't have the Microsoft Synthesizer installed. (Note that you cannot use it to play files over the Internet -- you have to download them first and play them locally off your computer.)
To run the program, you'll need a PC with a sound card/chip and a processor capable of running:
